Fequently Asked Questions

General

What types of cable do I need to attach a PC Switch KVM Switch or Extender product to my computer?
All PC Switch products require a single proprietary cable to connect to the keyboard, mouse, monitor, and audio connectors of your computer. Currently there are two options, the CA240H (no audio support) and the CA240H (full audio support). Both cables only support PS/2 connections for keyboard and mouse. The proprietary cable specification has never changed since its devlopment for the orignal PC Switch CLM100 released in the early 1990's. Therefore any previous SY Electronics KVM cable purchased previously will work with any of the current PC Switch products. Please remember though that the the current PC Switch products do not support serial mouse connections, and using an older cable with such connectors will not add such support. NOTE: The KVM_IP and KVM_IP_Lite products use an alternative cable that is supplied in the box when these products are purchased.

Can I use PC Switch products with any operating system?
All PC Switch products emulate PS/2 peripherals and VGA video, therefore any computer which has these connectors can use the products.

Functionality

Can I boot up several computers at the same time?
All PC Switch products allow you to boot all attached computers simultaneously. This is because the PC Switch emulates a keyboard, mouse and video, even when that particular computer is not selected. The PC Switch will hold individual keyboard, mouse and video settings for each of the attached computers. However when using an XKVM8 without an additional power supply it is advisable to boot the server/PC attached to channel 1 first and thereafter the subsequent servers/PCs.

Why should I choose a PC Switch CatX extender product?
Coaxial video cables that normally connect a video display to the computer are bulky, expensive and limited in length to about 30m. Standard keyboard and mouse cables also have a limited length before they become unusable.
As an alternative twisted-pair cables (such as CAT5) are more cost effective at longer lengths and are often already present in a building as a part of its integral structured cabling. CatX extenders make use of UTP CAT5/ CAT6 cabling to allow KVM signals to travel up to 300m

Can I use CatX extender to control a KVM switch?
All of the products in the CatX extender range can be used to link to any of the products in the KVM switch range. All CatX products can have their Hot-keys remapped to ensure easy operation. Some CatX products support the PC Switch cascade protocol (IPCP), allowing them to intergrate seemlessly within a casaced network.
For example, a CatX extender can be used to access a KVM switch in a server room and therefore acces to all the attached computers and/ or servers. This makes the CatX a powerful tool for any server administrator.

How-to

How do I improve the quality of the image output fom a CatX/ Video only extender?
All CatX/ Video only extender products are designed for the best possible video quality. The video signal will degrade as the length of CAT5/5e/6 cable increases, but each externder unit has a manual adjustment to compensate for this. All the units are designed to display a video resolution of 1280x1024 @75Hz at their maximum operating distance. Higher video resolutions may be acheivable, particularly at shorter distances.
